"Weird Girl" Literature

Things We Lost in the fire and The Dangers of Smoking in Bed

Bizarre feminist literature, these are a collection of short stories depicting the macabre body politic of Argentina as a consequence of corruption, unethical practices and other such atrocities that were prevalent in their political history. In these short stories, the author focusses on how this impacts marginalised communities: the women, the poor and the children. The impact is allegorical, manifesting as supernatural or spiritual.

The writing is fantastic, with the stylistic and lexical choices really adding on to and amplifying the horrific nature of the stories. It is blunt, entirely unapologetic and challengingly ambiguous. The stories often conclude in an open ended manner and the reader is left questioning what is real, what is not and what exactly does it all stand for.
